Mission & History
Founded in 2005 by Artistic Director Samuel Pott, Nimbus Dance Works has built a strong reputation for the quality of its artistic productions and its community and educational programs. Focusing its work on the intersection between high-level concert dance and innovative ways of involving communities and audiences, the company presents dance that is not only exciting and inspiring from a performance perspective, but also relevant and engaging for a broad spectrum of people: audiences, performers, partnering organizations, and the community at large. In addition to presenting performances locally and on tour, Nimbus involves itself deeply in the local community through programs such as JC Grooves, which provides both intensive after-school dance training as well as concert dance experiences for over 2000 public middle school students from throughout Jersey City. As company-in-residence at Grace Church Van Vorst, Nimbus maintains an active year-round presence in Jersey City. Additionally, the company has partnered with key local institutions such as the Jersey City Museum, the Jersey City Public Library, the Jersey City Board of Education, JCity Theater, and Arthouse Productions/JCFridays. In the Spring of 2008 Nimbus Dance Works was honored by an official resolution from the Jersey City Council acknowledging the company's contributions to the local community.
Nimbus Dance Works consists of seven top-tier dance artists drawn from widely recognized companies such as American Repertory Ballet, New Jersey Ballet, Metropolitan Opera, David Parsons Dance and others. The company regularly performs with live musicians and collaborates with theater companies, costume designers, and artists. Notable collaborations include work with Blue Note Jazz Artist Aaron Parks, notable New Jersey artists A.R. Wilkinson and Monica Broz, New York City-based chorus the New Amsterdam Singers, composer Judd Greenstein, and Con Vivo Chamber Music Group. In addition to its work in Jersey City, Nimbus has presented performances and programs throughout New Jersey, and in Maine, Boston, and New York City.
